Visualizing TV Spending in Wisconsin during the recall

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. This is especially true when trying to convey political data to the average supporter. Some of the best ways to convey this is to use infographics, venn diagrams or plot points on a Map. Google maps makes it easy for the average user to plot data points and information. However, sometimes you need a bit more development experience to display data for an entire area. That’s where we come in. We were recently tasked with designing a map that displayed tv ad spending by Wisconsin media market for the week leading up to the recall election. With media markets and spending figures in hand we used Google’s Map Charts API to develop the map below. We used a color scale ranging from dark blue to dark red to indicate the TV Spending Advantage by political party.
